Where is rice fortification running in MDM and what has happened?
Odisha: Rice fortification is currently happening in two districts of Odisha ? Gajapati & Dhenkanal in the Mid ? Day Meal (MDM)
Gajapati: The initiative is being sustained by Department of School & Mass Education (DS&ME), Government of Odisha. A total of 7356.22 MT of fortified rice have been produced till date starting from Jan., 2013.
Dhenkanal: Rice fortification is being implemented by DS&ME with WFP support in 4 blocks of the district. 61,560 children receive fortified rice through the MDM. Starting from December, 2016 till date 590.40 MT of fortified rice has been produced.
Karnataka: Started serving fortified rice in MDM since October 2016 in 3 districts (Bengaluru, Dharwad, Bidar). They will be extending to 4 additional decentralised districts. This was mentioned in their budget speech and also included in it.
Rajasthan: Providing fortified oil through MDM.
Haryana: Providing fortified oil through MDM in Ambala district, will soon start providing fortified rice and wheat flour too.
Maharastra: Providing fortified wheat flour in three districts .
Eighteen States: Providing Double Fortified Salt (DFS) through MDM. This includes Tamil Nadu and Tripura, among others.
Where is it gaining traction?
States like Dadar Nagar & Haveli, Chattisgarh, Haryana (Ambala district), Delhi Government, NDMC, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala (Kannur, Kasaragod - Beneficiaries ? 4,21,421 and Tonnage of Rice - 11,420 MT/Annum) are interested in introducing fortified rice through MDM.
Akshaya Patra Foundation, which runs centralized kitchens providing MDM meals across India, wants to provide fortified wheat flour and rice to approximately 8.5 lakh students in Gujarat and Karnataka. .
A directive has been issued for MDM programmes to use DFS in the MDM Scheme. As of today, 18 states have committed to promoting DFS in MDM programmes. Through government safety net programmes, DFS has the potential to reach 150-180 million of the most vulnerable sections of the population. .
