The National Summit on Fortification of Food was held from October 16-17, 2016 at Vigyan Bhawan,NewDelhi,India.
Honourable Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Pubic Distribution, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan and Honourable Union Minister of State Smt. Anupriya Patel graced the occasion.
The Summit began on World Food Day, October 16, 2016, with the lighting of the Ceremonial Lamp. Shri Ashish Bahuguna, Chairperson, FSSAI delivered the Welcome Address. Shri Pawan Agarwal, CEO, FSSAI set the context for the Summit. Dr. Hameed Nuru, Country Director, WFP delivered a Special Address.
In the two-day long Summit, FSSAI along with Government & Development Partners, Industry, eminent scientists and officials deliberated on Fortification of Food as a way to fight micronutrient malnutrition in India and developed an action plan to implement by all the stakeholders.
The Summit concluded with a Joint Declaration by all stakeholders as a mark of their commitment towards fighting micronutrient malnutrition in India.

Five categories of staple foods and micronutrients under focus were:

Wheat flour Iron, Folic acid, , Zinc, Vitamin B12, Vitamin A, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine
Rice Iron, Folic acid, , Zinc, Vitamin B12, Vitamin A, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine
Milk Vitamin A and Vitamin D
Oil Vitamin A and Vitamin D
Salt Iodine or double fortified with Iodine and Iron
FIVE Objectives of the Summit were to:

1. Review global and national scientific evidence in support of fortification of food.
2. Share global and national experience and lessons learned on fortification of food.
3. Develop a food-category wise roadmap for getting supply side ready for fortification.
4. Develop roadmap for mandating fortified food under key Government programmes.
5. Develop overall communication strategy for both supply and demand side interventions.

Five Highlights of the Summit

1. Operationalisation of comprehensive Regulations on fortification of food namely, ‘Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2016’
2. Unveiling of Logo for fortified foods.
3. Release of book “Journey of Food Fortification, Fighting Malnutrition, Improving Lives”.
4. Release of advocacy docket and communication pack for national roll out of food fortification.
5. Joint Declaration by stakeholders to support fortification of food.
