A Special Meeting on large-scale food fortification as a complementary strategy to fighting micronutrient malnutrition was held at the headquarters of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on November 17, 2016, in which Mr. Bill Gates , Trustee and Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was a Special Guest.
Secretaries from 8 key Central Ministries and Departments, namely,Ministry of Health and Family Welfare ,Ministry of Women and Child Development , Department of Food and Public Distribution ,Ministry of Human Resource Development ,Ministry of Food Processing Industries ,Department of Biotechnology ,Department of Health Research (Indian Council for Medical Research) , and Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries were present. Senior representatives from key development and industry partners also attended this meeting.
The Food Fortification Resource Center (FFRC) was formally launched at this Special Meeting The key functions of FFRC include enforcement, compliance, monitoring, technical support, training, capacity building for the supply side, advocacy and awareness for the government and consumers for large scale food fortification across India.
The online Portal of FFRC was also formally launched with a quick navigational demonstration for all the delegates. The key function of this Portal is to act as a knowledge, dissemination and interaction platform across stakeholders.
